The Vet Services Department staffs volunteers in several different areas around the Aquarium. Please see below for a list of their positions with a brief description and the prerequisites for volunteering in each of the different positions.
VSCM: Water Quality Lab - Water Quality volunteers assist in obtaining and testing approximately 2800 water samples that the Georgia Aquarium collects weekly from the exhibits.
Prerequisites:
- Training - 101: Orientation
- Zoonotics Training (Training - 141)
- Completed 32 volunteer hours (minimum 20 hours on the floor)
- Interview with the department
- Ability to volunteer 1 day a week 8:00am to 12:00pm (preferably same day each week)
- Complete the BTS Volunteer Questionaire & return to the Volunteer Programs Office (may be returned in person or via fax 404.581.4449)
VSCM: Commissary - Commissary volunteers assist the commissary staff in preparing the food for the animals as well as with cleaning & sanitizing the kitchen, refrigerator and freezer.
Prerequisites:
- Training - 101: Orientation
- Zoonotics Training (Training - 141)
- Strong suggested: Training - 150: Seafood Savvy and Training - 300: Conservation
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to volunteer 1 day a week from 7:00am to 11:00am (preferably same day each week)
- Complete the BTS Volunteer Questionnaire & return to the Volunteer Programs Office (may be returned in person or via fax 404.581.4449)
VSCM: Vet Tech Assistant - Veterinary Tech volunteers assist staff with animal exams, surgery, quarantine and necropsy.
Prerequisites:
- Training - 101: Orientation
- Zoonotics Training (Training - 141)
- Completed 32 volunteer hours (minimum 20 on the floor)
- Interview with the department
- Veterinary background preferred
- Complete the BTS Volunteer Questionnaire & return to the Volunteer Programs Office (may be returned in person or via fax 404.581.4449)
